Celebrating 50 Years of Central Grammar Apartments
🏛 Celebrating 50 Years of
Central Grammar Apartments 🏛
Congratulations to Central Grammar
Apartments on their 50th anniversary! I was honored to present an official
Senate citation to mark this momentous occasion.
When the historic Central Grammar School
across from Gloucester City Hall was once threatened with demolition, Action,
Inc. stepped in with a bold vision — to transform the building into affordable
senior housing.
With the leadership of  Denton Crews, Executive Director from
1968-1973, Bill Rochford, Carmine Gorga, and architect Kirk Noyes, the team
secured a purchase option from the city and developed a plan that brought this
vision to life.
The result was 80 units of affordable
housing for seniors, recognized as the nation’s first adaptive reuse of a
school building — a model that continues to thrive today.
This enduring success stands as a
testament to the innovation, determination, and collaboration that define the
Gloucester community - then & now.
