Vietnam Veterans Day

In 2017, the President signed into law the Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act to codify our nation’s gratitude for those who served.

March 29th, the day the last U.S. combat troops left Vietnam, is observed annually throughout the nation.

The official end of the war occurred 49 years ago. Of the 58,220 service men and women who died, 1,800 called #Massachusetts home. Of the more than 2.7 million Americans who served in the Vietnam War, more than 250,000 came from Massachusetts.

This important day should not go without recognition and reflection.

Today, please pause to remember and honor those Americans who served, the men and women who lost their lives, and the families and communities who love them still.

Visiting Gloucester's Future Workforce

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, we are collectively in the midst of navigating a course toward building a skilled, resilient, and successful workforce for the future. Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development's Secretary Lauren E. Jones' visit to Gloucester last week sent a message of partnership.

It was an honor joining my state colleagues and local officials in touring Gloucester High School's Career and Vocational Tech Program and Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute, Inc.'s Academy to allow her to see first-hand the very promising initiatives happening locally to achieve that goal.

Remembering Abigail Adams in the State House

“Remember the Ladies.” - Abigail Adams

Today, the Massachusetts Senate marked the first day of Women’s History month by unveiling a portrait of former First Lady Abigail Adams and putting out a public call for nominations for an influential woman to be the first honored with a permanent bust in the Senate Chamber.

The portrait of Adams, an early advocate for women’s rights, opposer of slavery, supporter of women’s education, and who advised the Founding Fathers to ‘remember

the ladies’ as they debated the structure and governance of the fledgling United States, was unveiled by Senate President Karen E. Spilka at a public ceremony. The portrait will hang permanently in the Senate Lobby.

She is the second woman with a permanent portrait in the Massachusetts Senate, following former Senate President Therese Murray, whose portrait hangs in the Senate Reading Room.
