Workers' Memorial Day: The Strife for a Safer Workplace

It was an honor to attend the Workers’ Memorial Day Ceremony hosted by the AFL-CIO and MassCOSH featuring keynote speaker Attorney General Andrea Campbell on the front steps of the State House today in Boston.

This solemn event, held in partnership with United Support and Memorial for Workplace Fatalities (USMWF), allowed us to remember the lives of those lost due to workplace tragedies and to stand with their families in solidarity.

Forty-eight Massachusetts workers tragically died on the job in 2024. It was incredibly moving to hear their names read aloud in memoriam.

Our constituent, Rena Harrington of Topsfield, USMWF President, also addressed the crowd by bravely sharing the story of her son Justin and speaking on behalf of families who have lost loved ones from traumatic workplace injuries.

Together, we honor the memory of the fallen and recommit to building safer, healthier workplaces for all.

Whale of a Day: Celebrating and Protecting the Right Whale

I was honored to join with so many partners in the effort to save the North Atlantic Right Whale today at the New England Aquarium for a celebration of "Right Whale Day" in Massachusetts.  Following an intensive campaign, Right Whale Day was established by legislation that became law on January 4, 2023. The day gives us an opportunity to reflect on the importance of this endangered species, and our special obligation to protect and support these incredible creatures, with as much as 75% of them being in Massachusetts waters in the winter and spring.

Beyond adopting the North Atlantic Right Whale as the official Marine Mammal of our Commonwealth, our state has taken several important steps toward meeting our responsibility for their stewardship, including measures I have secured over the past several years to provide funding for the Environmental Police to conduct specialized patrols to protect the whales when they are in our area ,and  to provide grants to participants in the lobster fishery to purchase innovative gear to prevent whale entanglements. Most recently, on November 20, 2024, Governor Healey signed into law legislation I filed to give the Division of Marine Fisheries and the Environmental Police the clear authority to remove abandoned fishing gear from our waters, helping to eliminate a major threat for whale entanglement. Thanks to Senators Montigny, Lovely, and O'Connor for co-sponsoring that legislation, and all of my colleagues in the House and Senate for supporting it.

One way you can help the effort is to get a Massachusetts Right Whale & Roseate Terns Conservation License Plate. To learn how to get this plate please go here: https://www.mass.gov/.../massachusetts-right-whale...

Thanks to all of the public officials, state and federal agencies, organizations, and individuals who continue to work together for the goal of  increasing the population of Northern Right Whales, including those who earn a living from commercial lobster fishing, who make a tremendous sacrifice by not fishing for several months each year when right whales are most likely to be in our coastal waters.

Gloucester's Guardian Angel

Last week, I joined Mayor Verga, Tony Gross, City Council President and Marjorie Grace, Ward 3 City Councilor at Gloucester City Hall in presenting special citations to Bernard Christie, a true hometown hero, in recognition of his incredible act of humanity.

On April 4th, Bernard witnessed a moment of distress as 14-year-old Jayden, who has profound autism, accidentally dropped his iPad—his essential communication tool—into the harbor. Without hesitation, Bernard climbed down the seawall and jumped into the cold water to retrieve it. His quick, selfless act meant the world to Jayden’s mother, Kim Brisbois, who called him a “guardian angel.”

While the device couldn’t be saved, the impact of Bernard’s compassion and courage will long be remembered. In a world where small acts of kindness can mean everything, Bernard showed us all what it means to be a good neighbor.

In the words of Jayden's mother, Kim: "It gives me hope to know that people like him (Bernard) are in this world."

Make Every Day Earth Day

On Saturday, I was honored to share remarks at the 2025 Earth Month and Day celebration in Newburyport organized by the Alliance of Climate and Environmental Stewards (ACES), which this year placed a special spotlight on the incredible work and voices of our youth.

From climate concerns to innovative projects, these young stewards are making a real impact—and it was inspiring to witness their passion and dedication firsthand.

"These funds, placed in the capable hands of housing authority officials, will prevent that from happening, modernize these units, and ensure that they continue to be safe and available for the people that need them.""

'State tells feds action ensure groundfish season starts May 1'
Gloucester Daily Times Article by Ethan Forman

Excerpt below:

"“This is very much a collaborative effort,” state Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr, R-Gloucester, said of the effort to get the right groundfish rules in place by May 1. “We are all on the same page.”

There are two competing issues, Tarr said; the need to get the rules in place on time, but also the need to make sure the science used in going from two to four cod stocks is right.

“We need to go back and address the science and substance of the framework.

“This framework and even the amendment reflect a major change in the way we manage the cod fishery,” he said. The change needed an adequate and robust process.

“The feeling that I think a lot of us have … is it was rushed to meet the May 1 deadline but the result of that is a completely inappropriate suite of measures,” Tarr said."
