In mid-June, I stood alongside Governor Maura Healey, MassDOT officials, the Massachusetts State Police, members of the Wrong-Way Driving Task Force, and local and state legislators to announce a comprehensive effort to combat wrong-way driving on Massachusetts roads.
Just two months later, that commitment is becoming action.
On July 9, our comprehensive wrong-way driving legislation became law as part of the FY2027 state budget. On Tuesday, I released a statement following MassDOT’s announcement that the installation of state-of-the-art wrong-way driving detection and prevention technology is already underway at prioritized locations along the Route 128 corridor between Peabody and Gloucester, with additional locations across the Commonwealth to follow.
These devices will help detect wrong-way drivers and provide immediate warnings, making our roads safer and helping prevent the kind of tragic crashes that took the lives of Sgt. Cole, Chris Dailey, and Trooper Trainor.
Seeing this work move from legislation to installation in just a few short months is meaningful progress. We made a commitment to do everything possible to prevent these tragedies from happening again, and I am grateful to everyone who has helped turn that commitment into action.
