Gloucester's annual Fisherman's Memorial Service gives us all the opportunity to remember and honor those who have lost their lives in the commercial fishing industry, and to express support for the family members, friends, and community that live on without them. Speaking at this service enabled me to offer personal perspectives on the losses our community has endured since its earliest days, and the resulting strength, resilience, and character that have become woven into the fabric of the nation's oldest fishing port. I am deeply grateful to the Fishermen's Memorial Service Committee for revitalizing this important event for everyone in our community several years ago, and for providing me with the honor of serving as the keynote speaker at the service that took place on Saturday, August 9. In the wake of the tragic loss of the crew of the fishing vessel Lily Jean earlier this year, and in memory of all of those who have perished while fishing, we must continue to stand together on behalf of our fishing industry and our fishing families.
