'$218M project begins to update Gloucester treatment plant'

"About 70 people attended a groundbreaking ceremony at the Gloucester facility, 50 Essex Ave., including Mayor Paul Lundberg, City Council President Tony Gross, other city officials, state Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr, R-Gloucester, representatives from the office of U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Salem, and a bevy of project officials.
The city has been mandated by both the state and federal governments to install secondary sewage treatment.
Gross told those assembled he actually worked at the water pollution control facility several years ago.
“The appreciation I have for the members of this group is unmeasurable,” Gross said. “I’m here to offer my help.”
Tarr said the project shows the importance of being “good stewards for our environment.”
“This is a day that’s been a long time coming,” Tarr said. “This is a day of reckoning. We are all in this together. The next chapter is being written now.”
