LEGISLATIVE TOUR OF O’MALEY MIDDLE SCHOOL SCIENCE CENTRAL
LEGISLATIVE TOUR OF O’MALEY MIDDLE SCHOOL SCIENCE CENTRAL
As many families prepare to head back to school this week, I wanted to highlight an important and innovative program in Gloucester Public Schools: Science Central at O’Maley Middle School.
Earlier this summer, I was pleased to lead a legislative tour with Rep. Dru Tarr, joined by representatives from the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center, state and local officials, educators, and community partners.
I first invited members of the Joint Committee on Education to visit Science Central during my testimony last November on S.457, An Act to establish the Middle School Innovation Fund. The legislation, which I championed with the late Representative Ann-Margaret Ferrante and Senator Michael O. Moore was reported favorably and is currently under review by the Senate Ways and Means Committee following the suggested redraft of S.2862.
In addition, I have secured $160,000 in state funding for Science Central through the FY25 and FY26 Surtax Supplemental Budgets, supporting investments in our schools, strengthening classroom resources, and helping provide students with innovative, hands-on learning opportunities.
The tour gave us an opportunity to showcase the program in action and learn firsthand how hands-on, interdisciplinary learning can strengthen student engagement and achievement.
As we begin a new school year, Science Central is a terrific example of what can happen when innovative educators, students, government, and community partners work together to create new opportunities for our young people.
