'Barrett: Bypass line around Haverhill sewage leak could be finished Wednesday'

"A group of area legislators also wrote to Healey on Tuesday about the discharge “and disastrous consequences for the environment, our regional economy, downstream communities on the river, countless beachgoers who will be deprived of the experience of visiting our beaches during a peak holiday season, our commercial and recreational fisheries, and more.
“In addition, the degradation in water quality caused by these discharges poses a serious threat to public health that must continue to be properly addressed,” wrote the group that included Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr, R-Gloucester; state Rep. Dru Tarr, D-Gloucester; state Rep. Tram Nguyen, D-Andover, and state Sen. Joan Lovely, D-Salem.
The legislators made numerous urgent requests including “initiating the process potential economic relief for affected commercial fishing industry participants such as shellfish harvesters, businesses, municipal governments, and other individuals and organizations, including outreach through the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the declaration of a state level emergency, as appropriate.”
The group also asked for briefings, at least daily, by the Healey administration on the situation.
