'Tarr, Healey Urge ‘Full Court Press,’ ‘Whole-of-Government Response’ to Haverhill’s Untreated Sewage'

"Senate Republican Minority Leader Bruce E. Tarr, whose downriver communities are suffering the brunt of Haverhill’s force main failure and untreated sewage discharges, Monday called for “a full court press from state government” to quickly resolve the problem and pay for damage.
Gov. Maura Healey responded with, what she called, a “whole-of-government response” to “stop the wastewater discharge into the Merrimack River, protect public health and restore access to beaches and shellfish areas.”
Tarr, who represents Merrimack River communities Groveland, West Newbury, Salisbury and Newburyport, said Monday he’s looking to halt Haverhill’s wastewater releases as soon as possible. With that he seeks testing and monitoring to gauge environmental impacts, remediate the damage, “compensate” cleanup effects and maintain communication.
“The ongoing release of millions of gallons of untreated effluent into the Merrimack River as one of the peak periods of summer activity approaches is an emergency with many potentially serious consequences for public health, beachgoers, our commercial and recreational fisheries, the regional economy and the environment,” Tarr said."
