'Ann-Margaret Ferrante honored as a champion of marine advocacy'

"Sen. Tarr said the future of the station, which is now used as a place to allow university and local students to study marine life right by the water and conduct research to address real climate issues, was in question when its former principal leader Herb Hultin, a professor of food science for the university, passed away around the turn of the century.
“(Ferrante and I) came over and we looked at this facility and we realized its legacy, we knew because it was so important to the fishing industry that (the station) cannot die,” Sen. Tarr said during his remarks.
He described “an uphill battle” he, Ferrante and many others undertook to revitalize the station. Over time, more and more people agreed to help make the station what it is today with Ferrante “stepping on the accelerator” to get things done, he said.
“We began to move more quickly, more deliberately and things began to fall into place more concretely because we understood that the vision could come to fruition,” Sen. Tarr said. “That’s what this day is about, it’s about vision, it’s about heart, it’s about persistence and it’s about an enduring belief that we can make this world a better place.”
When crafting the vision of what the station could become, Sen. Tarr recounted the time he and Ferrante spent whale watching and “thinking big thoughts.”
“This facility has what no other facility anywhere else will ever have, (Ferrante’s) spirit,” he said. “My hope is that in the future students, researchers, scientists, they’re going to sit right there and look out over the same ocean that we looked out and think big thoughts.”"
