"Out of deep grief, an outpouring of global support and $1m+ in funds for families of lost Gloucester fishing crew"

“In the depths of grief, folks are finding so many ways to express support,” said state Senator Bruce Tarr, who was at the brainstorming session at the harbormaster’s office that spawned the creation of the F/V Lily Jean Fund. “The amount of sources and the diversity of the sources has been absolutely inspiring.”

AND

“It’s been a long time since we’ve had a crew this large be lost,” Tarr said, estimating that it had been about 50 years.

“What it really does, is bring out the character of the community,” Tarr said.

It’s a community intertwined with life at sea, the incredibly prosperous times and the grief-filled times of loss, Tarr said.

“We know Gloucester is a generous and supportive community, and we know that up and down the coast, the fishing community is very supportive in these times of trouble,” Tarr said. “What we never anticipated was the magnitude of the response, contributions coming from all over the world in a relatively short period of time.”
