I was pleased to welcome students from Pingree School to the Massachusetts State House as part of their exploration of local and state government.
Earlier in the semester, the students visited municipal offices in Wenham and Beverly to learn about government at the local level. Their visit to the State House provided an opportunity to continue that learning and gain a deeper understanding of how state government works and how public policy is developed.
As part of their course, "Citizens Empowered: Understanding How Local & State Government Works", students examined important issues including housing affordability, environmental stewardship, and waste management and recycling. I appreciated the opportunity to discuss these topics with them and answer their thoughtful questions.
Engaging students in the civic process is essential to strengthening our communities and our democracy. I was encouraged by their curiosity, preparation, and commitment to understanding how government can serve as a force for positive change.
