After 33 years of service to the Newburyport, Massachusetts Fire Department Jane was celebrated by friends, colleagues, and family with a well-deserved retirement party. This last Saturday night, at the Fire Station on Morgan Street, I was delighted to present her with a Senate Citation in recognition of her years of public service at Newbury.
Happy to co-sponsor this exhibition of these works of art now on display inside the State House. Each portrait is accompanied by an essay by the subject about all the ways they are more than their mental illness, physical disability, health diagnosis, or life situation. The exhibit will be on display through November 7, please come visit.
Helping to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the City of Gloucester, MA with Gloucester 400 was an honor this weekend. I was invited to be the Master of Ceremonies for a power-packed program of speakers, presentations, performances, and conversations at Putnam Auditorium at Gloucester High School.
With: Mayor Greg Verga, City of Gloucester, Rep. Ann-Margaret Ferrante, Former Gloucester Mayor Bruce Tobey read former Gloucester Poet Laureate John J. Ronan's poem 'Hymn For Gloucester at 400', Allen Estes Music, Project 351, Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute, Inc. Co-Founder and Director David Walt.
In 1965, Martin Luther King Jr. addressed the House and Senate from the rostrum of the House Chamber at the State House in Boston and delivered a speech that helped bring focus to the Voting Rights Act that would become law just a few months later.
“There are still too many individuals who argue and who feel that the problem of racial injustices can only be solved by waiting on time,” said Dr. King. “Ultimately we must come to see that human progress never rolls in on the wills of inevitability. It comes through the tireless efforts and the persistent work of the dedicated individuals who are willing to be co-workers with God.”
Today, marked the first day of the 193rd session of the State Senate and the General Court. I am deeply humbled by the support of the people of the First Essex and Middlesex District and I want to express my gratitude to my constituents. I am further honored to have been elected to continue serving as the Senate Minority Leader. All of the members were sworn into office by Governor Charlie Baker. He will make his 'lone walk' from the State House in just a few minutes. I look forward to serving you in the Senate.
