TARR IN THE NEWS 6.6.25

As National CPR and AED Awareness Week comes to a close, I want to take a moment to highlight important legislation I have filed this session in collaboration with Newburyport High School student Madeleine Jackman.

Madeleine’s powerful and deeply moving story—surviving a sudden cardiac event thanks to the quick actions of those trained in CPR—has inspired action to ensure more lives can be saved in the future.

Our bi-partisan, bi-camera bill aims to expand access to CPR and AED training, including:

▶️ Requiring certification in CPR to graduate high school

▶️ Expanding CPR high school health education curriculum to include the use of an AED

▶️ Ensuring standards in CPR and AED curriculum be kept current to reflect national guidelines

‘Tarr, Newburyport Student Propose CPR Bill’

Article by Matt Petry Daily News of Newburyportrt

Excerpt below:

“Thanks to the combined efforts of Newburyport High School junior Madeleine Jackman and Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr, R-Gloucester, CPR certification may soon become a high school graduation requirement.

Tarr made the announcement Thursday that he would be advancing “An act requiring instruction in CPR and the use of defibrillators for high school graduation,” in a move honoring National Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) Awareness Week.

Tarr described CPR as a basic but lifesaving skill.

“A modest investment of time for training can translate literally into a life saved,” Tarr said.

Key elements of the bill include requiring certification in CPR to graduate high school, expanding CPR high school health education curriculum to include the use of an AED, and nsuring standards in CPR and AED curriculum be kept current to reflect national guidelines

Tarr said he was inspired by Jackman's efforts, prompting him to make sure her name was on the bill.”
