Pentecost Sunday

Yesterday June 8th on Pentecost Sunday, I was honored to attend the Annual Crowning Feast of the Holy Spirit at Our Lady of Good Voyage Catholic Church in Gloucester—a cherished Cape Ann tradition that has been celebrated since 1902.

This beautiful even is a powerful symbol of faith, gratitude, and community, rooted in a promise made over a century ago by Portuguese sea captain Joseph P. Mesquita after he and his crew survived a harrowing shipwreck at sea.

Captain Mesquita’s legacy lives on through this enduring celebration, which honors Queen Isabella’s spirit of generosity and crowns one community member as imperator for a day, in recognition of their selfless service.

The Crowning remains a sure sign of spring on Cape Ann and a heartfelt reminder of the strength and resilience that define our community.
