"State Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr, R-Gloucester, and state Rep. Ann-Margaret Ferrante, D-Gloucester, were able to file the the home rule petition, “An Act Establishing the Gloucester Fisheries Commission,” jointly and get it passed."

"Tarr’s office said the bill reaffirms the city’s longstanding commitment to the fishing industry.
Tarr and Ferrante filed the bill at the request of Mayor Greg Verga and the City Council which had passed the request unanimously. It was enacted Oct. 6 by the House and Senate.
Since its establishment nearly seven decades ago, the Gloucester Fisheries Commission has served as a vital advisory body investigating, advocating for, and recommending measures to promote, preserve and protect the local fishing industry.
“Since its inception, Gloucester’s commercial fishing industry has provided an unsurpassed protein resource, supported fishing families, and written chapters in American history,” Tarr said.
“Now, as the port works to lead with innovation that builds sustainability and environmental stewardship along with prosperity, it needs the forum the commission provides for stakeholders to exchange ideas and build the fisheries policy of the future.”
