Purple Heart Ceremony - Rowley 11/8/25

On November 8, 2025, the Town of Rowley came together for a powerful and deeply moving Purple Heart Ceremony—an event that reminded us of the extraordinary courage and sacrifice of those who have worn our nation’s uniform.

The Purple Heart, America’s oldest military decoration first established by General George Washington, holds a profound place in our history and in the hearts of all who value freedom.

Rowley is home to several remarkable Purple Heart recipients, including:

• Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant Nick George, awarded three Purple Hearts for injuries sustained during the Korean War;
• Navy Gunners Mate Chester Bishop, awarded two Purple Hearts for wounds suffered in Vietnam; and
• Army Ranger Nick Ford, who used his own body to shield a fellow soldier from a grenade attack in Afghanistan.

We also heard from Veterans Service Officer Steve Bohn, himself a Purple Heart recipient who served in Afghanistan, as he spoke about the valor and loyalty of his comrades. Selectman Bob Snow, a Marine Corps veteran who assisted hundreds of wounded service members during his time in uniform, shared his powerful reflections as well.

Each story was different, but every one carried the same truth: these brave men risked—and in many cases sacrificed—their own safety for their brothers in arms and for our nation. Their strength, devotion, and willingness to stand for one another inspire all of us.

My sincere thanks to Ron and Tammy Garron and the Rowley Veterans Committee for organizing this important event; to Commander Al Varelas for formally welcoming Rowley into the Purple Heart community; and to Select Board Chair Sheri David for reading the proclamation declaring Rowley a Purple Heart Community.

We are grateful beyond words for the service and sacrifice of our Purple Heart heroes.
