'Tarr presses for action to prevent wrong-way crashes'
By State House Reporter Christian Wade | Gloucester Daily Times

"The death of Massachusetts State Police Trooper Kevin Trainor in Wednesday’s head-on crash on Route 1 is a “tragic” wake-up call for Beacon Hill to take immediate steps to prevent wrong-way crashes, says state Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr, who has been pushing for safety upgrades along the state’s highways."

"Tarr was working on related legislation prior to Wednesday’s tragedy, in the wake of a wrong-way crash on the A. Piatt Andrew Bridge in Gloucester last June that fatally injured new Gloucester High School graduate Christopher Dailey, 18, and injured four others. Laurence Hayes, 81, of Reading, has pleaded not guilty to vehicular homicide and other charges related to that crash.
Tarr, a Gloucester Republican, said he plans to file an amendment to the Senate version of the state budget calling for taking short- and long-term steps to improve roadway safety, including expanding the use of wrong-way detection systems and other technologies to help prevent fatal accidents.
“We need to act to make our roadways safer,” Tarr said Thursday. “This is one of those situations where we know if we take action we will be saving lives.”
Tarr said there are immediate steps the state could take to prevent wrong-way crashes, such as adding new signage, painting directional arrows along road surfaces and placing plastic barriers along highway on-ramps to warn motorists heading the wrong way.
“There is a spectrum of things we can do, some that are simple and relatively inexpensive,” he said.
The Senate minority leader said the GOP caucus also plans to file a standalone bill that would require the state to employ a “multi-sensory” wrong-way detection program on highways and mandate new drivers’ education teachings aimed at preventing wrong-way crashes, among other requirements."
