The recent reopening of the Middle Street Bridge connecting the City of Newburyport and Town of West Newbury is cause for celebration, not only for the return of this important piece of our transportation infrastructure, but also for the partnerships that made it possible.
When the bridge's future was in doubt, I responded to outreach from both communities by convening a meeting of legislators, including my house colleagues State Representative Adrianne Ramos & State Representative Dawne Shand, local officials and representatives of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) to find a way forward. Through the leadership of officials from Newburyport and West Newbury, an inter-municipal agreement was reached.
From that first meeting to securing the necessary funding, beginning construction, and finally clearing the last hurdle, it has been a long road to completion.
The bridge’s reopening is an important investment in safety, connectivity, and the continued partnership between Newburyport and West Newbury. I’m pleased to see this project reach the finish line and look forward to joining local officials and community members for the ribbon-cutting this Friday, October 9th.
Thank you to everyone who helped bring this project across the finish line, including the municipal teams, engineers, contractors, state agencies, and elected officials who remained committed throughout the process.
Thank you also to Matt Petry of the Daily News of Newburyport for his coverage of this community project’s completion.
