Completion of the Plummer Spring Road / Middle Street Bridge Project Ribbon Cutting | Friday, October 9th, 2026

The completion and reopening of the Plummer Spring Road / Middle Street Bridge connecting Newburyport and West Newbury is cause for celebration, not only for the restoration of this important transportation link, but also for the collaboration and partnerships that made it possible.

I was pleased to join Mayor Sean Reardon, Interim West Newbury Town Manager Sean Fitzgerald, my legislative colleagues State Representative Adrianne Ramos and State Representative Dawne Shand, local officials, and community members for the ribbon cutting, where I shared remarks recognizing the work that brought this project across the finish line.

When the bridge’s future was uncertain following its closure in July 2018, I worked with my legislative partners and officials from both communities to help identify a path forward. Through continued collaboration, an inter-municipal agreement, and $3 million in combined local funding and state grants, this long-awaited project became a reality.

The new bridge represents an important investment in public safety, accessibility, and connectivity for residents of both communities. Its completion is also a testament to the persistence of local leaders and the many people who remained committed to finding a solution.

Thank you to the municipal teams, local and state officials, engineers, contractors, state agencies, and everyone who played a role in bringing this project to completion. It was a pleasure to celebrate this milestone and the continued partnership between Newburyport and West Newbury.
