New floating beach wheelchair from non-profit organization SMILE Mass.
Last month, our Senior District Director, MaryAnn Nay
attended the City of Newburyport’s ceremony to celebrate the generous gift of a
new floating beach wheelchair from non-profit organization SMILE Mass.
The ceremony took place at the Harbormaster Attendant
building at Plum Island Point beach.
SMILE Mass (Small Miracles in Life Exist) is a 501C3
non-profit organization that helps families raising children or adults with
disabilities enjoy happy, healthy memories through education, vacation, and
recreation experiences.
Since its inception, SMILE Mass has donated more than 180
floating beach wheelchairs to public ponds and beaches throughout New England
to make them more accessible to all.
Newburyport is one of five winners of the 2024 Floating
Beach Wheelchair Award.
The floating beach wheelchair will be maintained by the
Harbormaster’s Office, and community members can reserve use of the chair on
the City’s reservation site here, under Facilities: https://newburyportma.myrec.com/info/facilities
