'Officials push to prevent wrong-way drivers'

By Ethan Forman | Gloucester Daily Times

"State Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr, R-Gloucester, says there is an “intense effort” underway to prevent wrong-way drivers on Bay State highways in light of the June 30 crash that claimed the life of new Gloucester High graduate.

“We’re mounting an intense effort to address not only the situation that occurred here but also to address this issue on a broader basis throughout the state,” Tarr said in an interview."

AND

"On July 29, Tarr hosted a Zoom meeting with various stakeholders, including highway officials and engineers from MassDOT, the commander of the Danvers State Police barracks, Cape Ann police chiefs, fire chiefs from Manchester-by-the-Sea, Essex and Gloucester, and a professor from the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Another professor from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is also involved in the effort, but was not on the call, Tarr said.

AND

“We are going to conduct an all-hands-on deck exercise to explore every option to prevent this from ever happening again,” Bruce Tarr said.

The initial focus is going to be the Route 128 corridor between Burlington and Gloucester, but he said what is learned probably would be applicable to the rest of the state.

“There are technologies available, some of which have already begun to be used in Massachusetts, are in a pilot phase and they are expensive, but one thing that is important to emphasize is that those technologies are costly but they also respond after there has been someone going the wrong way on a roadway,” Sen. Tarr said."
