Natural Gas Safety Bill Filed

In response to the Merrimack Valley gas explosions Governor Charlie Baker filed a bill which will help ensure the safe construction, operation and maintenance of gas infrastructure. This bill makes certain requirements for gas work when that work could pose a material risk to public safety and comes with direct input and recommendations by the National Transportation Safety Board.

My office released the following statement today:

"The natural gas explosions in the Merrimack Valley have caused a tragic loss of life, severe hardships for residents, and major economic damage for local businesses and the regional economy.

Every possible action needs to be explored and taken to prevent this type of disaster from ever happening again. The actions recommended by the National Transportation Safety Board can contribute to that priority in a significant way, and we should waste no time in addressing them.

Through timely hearings, and careful yet expedited consideration, I hope that the Senate and House will act quickly and decisively act on the legislation filed by Governor Baker and similar measures as they become known and available."
