The lobster industry both feeds and employs many people while generating revenue for the region. But we know the industry is under threat. It's under threat because we have an obligation to protect the Northern Right Whale, which could be threatened by lobster gear put into the ocean, particularly in the months between February and May. In fact, we had this year a total closure of the lobster fisher in Massachusetts from February until May 15. A total closure. The folks in this industry could not earn a living. This is a serious problem and it involves the federal courts, regulators, and the Endangered Species Act.
