Last weekend, I had pleasure of attending the opening reception for 'Portraits of Women, by Women,' a powerful exhibit presented by Rocky Neck Art Colony and Hammond Castle Museum.

This inspiring collection featured contemporary portraits by talented women artists from the Rocky Neck Art Colony, capturing the strength, beauty, and diversity of women’s experiences.

The exhibit also included works by Irene Fenton Hammond and Natalie Hays Hammond, highlighting the legacy of these remarkable women. 

It’s a beautiful tribute to Women’s History Month and the incredible impact women have made in the arts and beyond.

Thank you to Rocky Neck Art Colony and Hammond Castle Museum for hosting such a meaningful celebration of women’s contributions to art and culture.

GEF Power of Play

Congratulations to the Gloucester Education Foundation for another fantastic Power of Play event held this past Sunday at the Gloucester High School in the Field House! 

It was a day full of hands-on activities for all ages, including martial arts, sensory jars, box fort-building, science fun, and more—truly a celebration of why play matters!

One of my highlights was playing a lively game of Simon Says with Gloucester Public School Kindergarten Teacher Jaclyn Baldassano!

A big thank you to the Gloucester Education Foundation, all of the volunteers, and sponsors who made this event possible! 

Newburyport Human Rights Commission Celebrating Ramadan

This Thursday I was honored to join the Newburyport Human Rights Commission and members of the community for a special evening celebrating and learning about Ramadan. 

The event at Newburyport High School included a thoughtful educational program followed by a traditional iftar meal, which is the meal that breaks the daily fast during Ramadan after sunset. 

It was a wonderful opportunity to deepen our understanding of this important tradition and share a meaningful experience with friends and neighbors.

Recognizing Vietnam War Veterans

Today, on National Vietnam War Veterans Day, we pay tribute to the over 6 million U.S. veterans who bravely served our nation during the Vietnam War, and we honor the families of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

This year’s commemoration on March 29, 2025, holds special significance as it marks the 50th anniversary of the war’s end. It is a powerful reminder of the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of those who answered the call to serve.

To all Vietnam veterans—thank you for your service, your sacrifice, and your unwavering dedication to our country. 

We will never forget.

Recognizing Women Featured in HERstory Volume III

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of participating in an incredibly moving ceremony honoring the remarkable achievements of more than 90 women featured in HERstory Volume III, who have made a lasting impact on our Commonwealth. 

This volume celebrates trailblazers across diverse fields—from astronauts and athletes to suffragists and literary icons—each demonstrating the resilience, courage, and determination it takes to break barriers and lead the way.

Thank you to Senate President Karen E. Spilka hosting this important event and for her continued commitment to uplifting the voices and stories of extraordinary women. 

It was an honor to celebrate alongside so many, including two of the inspiring women featured: Suzanne Lee and Bobbi Gibb.

Bobbi Gibb, who grew up in Rockport, made history in 1966 as the first woman to run the Boston Marathon, defying expectations and paving the way for generations of female athletes.

Thank you to everyone who joined us to recognize these incredible women and their contributions to Massachusetts and beyond. It was a fitting tribute to honor the legacy of each one of their stories as Women’s History Month comes to a close

Recognizing Historical Women Figures

During Women’s History Month, a time to honor the extraordinary contributions of women throughout history, the Massachusetts Senate is making history of its own. 

Yesterday, Senate President Karen E. Spilka announced that busts of two remarkable women—Abigail Adams, a champion of women’s rights and trusted presidential advisor, and Elizabeth Freeman, a courageous freedom fighter who was the first enslaved woman to successfully sue for her freedom in the United States—will be commissioned and placed in the Massachusetts Senate Chamber.

I was honored to serve on the Senate Art Committee that worked on this incredibly important project. 

These busts will be the first permanent sculptures of women in the Massachusetts State House and the first to be included in the Senate Chamber’s esteemed collection of sculptures. 

Recognizing these trailblazing women in such a lasting and visible way is a fitting tribute during Women’s History Month and a powerful reminder of their enduring impact on our nation.

May these sculptures not only serve as a reminder of the profound contributions of women to our nation and state’s history but also as an inspiration from within our Senate Chamber for future generations of women to come. 

Celebrating Tuskegee Airmen at the State House

Today, I had the honor and privilege of meeting Dr. Harold May, one of the original Tuskegee Airmen, in the Senate Chamber. 

Dr. May was a distinguished guest of Senator Cindy Creem, who invited him to be recognized for his historic contributions and courageous service to our nation during World War II.

The Tuskegee Airmen were the first African American fighter pilot unit in the U.S. Army Air Corps, which helped pave the way for desegregation in the military.

At 99 years old, Dr. May continues to serve our country by advocating to establish the fourth Thursday in March as Tuskegee Airmen Commemoration Day in Massachusetts.

This day would honor the bravery and sacrifice of Black pilots, bombardiers, navigators, flight surgeons, nurses, mechanics, instructors, crewmembers, and all support personnel who changed the course of history.

50th Anniversary of the Massachusetts Caucus of Women Legislators

The Massachusetts Caucus of Women Legislators is a tremendous resource for the Massachusetts legislature, and one that has provided me with valuable information, insight, and guidance over the years. 

The Caucus plays a critical role in supporting women legislators, developing and advancing legislation, and ensuring that the perspective of its members is never lost on Beacon Hill or throughout Massachusetts.

Clearly it has made a difference for 50 years, and surely it will make a powerful impact in the years ahead.

Harborlight Homes "Appy Hour" Breakfast

Recently, Ted Thomas, my Legislative Director, and I attended a gathering with local legislators and elected officials at Harborlight Homes' Legislative "Appy Hour"—a great alternative to a traditional Legislative Breakfast! 

It was a valuable opportunity to discuss Affordable Housing needs in our region and other key legislative priorities.

Prostate Cancer Awareness Day 2025

Creating a Massachusetts Model of National Leadership in Prostate Cancer Equity

Today marks the 16th annual Prostate Cancer Awareness Day.

Massachusetts is leading the charge in the fight against prostate cancer by expediting public awareness, medical education and research, advocacy, and access to high-quality care.

Since 2009, the Annual Prostate Cancer Awareness Day (PCAD) has been a cornerstone event at the Massachusetts State House. In 2011, the Massachusetts General Court made history by recognizing prostate cancer as a public health priority, a leading health disparity, and a central issue in men’s health.

This commitment led to the first-in-the-nation state program in 2013, dedicated to integrating research, education, and awareness—bringing cutting-edge medical advances to the most vulnerable and underserved communities.

Together, we are building a healthier future for all men and ensuring that no one is left behind in the fight against prostate cancer. 

Hamilton-Wenham Girls Cross Country Team at the State House

Recently, I had the honor of welcoming the state champions Hamilton-Wenham  Girls Cross Country Team to the State House, where I was joined by Kristin Kassner State Representative 2nd Essex District and Sally Kerans for State Representative in honoring them with official citations from the Senate and the House. 

We also had the opportunity to give these impressive student athletes, who have won the MIAA Division 3 State Championship, a tour of the State House, including the Senate and House Chambers.

Thanks to the team members and their coaches for this special visit, and for reminding us what teamwork is all about.

Love of Reading at Pathways in Gloucester

Celebrating the Love of Reading with Pathways for Children!

Last week, I joined Pathways for Children at their Gloucester location to celebrate Read Across America as one of their Super Star Readers.

I had a great time reading "Pete the Cat and the Perfect Pizza Party" with the kids. 

A huge thank you to Pathways for Children for hosting this incredible program and to everyone who took part in making reading fun and engaging for our youngest learners.

IRWA Legislative Breakfast in Middleton

On March 11th, I was pleased to join fellow legislators, community leaders, and advocates at the Ipswich River Watershed Association (IRWA) Legislative Breakfast at Ferncroft Country Club in Middleton. This annual event is an important forum to discuss water resilience, conservation, and housing policy in our region. 

Future Farmers of America

On Tuesday, I was pleased to join with the Massachusetts Farm Bureau, the Future Farmers of America, and members of the farming and fishing community to celebrate Massachusetts Agriculture Day at the State House. Once again, this event provided us with an opportunity to celebrate those who work hard to ensure we have access to locally produced food products. they are dedicated individuals who are cultivating not only crops but also community spirit, tradition, and sustainable practices.

Operation Troop Support Annual Banquet

On Sunday, March 16 Operation Troop Support held its annual banquet at Danversport. 

This remarkable organization continues to do the important work of supporting our military personnel deployed around the world, and honoring those who have served throughout our nation's history.

This year's banquet focused on recognizing veterans of the Korean War and their families, and I was honored to join with my colleague, Senator Joan Lovely, to present the Moody family, which tirelessly leads the organization, with a Senate Citation acknowledging their efforts to provide that recognition.

Meeting with Future Leaders in North Andover

Last week, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Jonah Malvey, an impressive 8th grader from St. Michael School in North Andover. 

Jonah reached out to me by letter to share his future interest of having a role in government. It's inspiring to see civic-minded, young people eager to engage with their local state legislators. 

His enthusiasm is a strong reminder that the next generation of leaders is already thinking about how they can contribute to our state and nation. 

I appreciate his thoughtful questions and look forward to seeing the impact he'll make in the years ahead!

Last week, I was honored to attend the Essex County Chiefs of Police Association's Legislative Breakfast at Mission Boathouse in Beverly. This annual gathering provided another valuable opportunity to connect with law enforcement leaders to discuss key policy issues, transparency, and procedural justice in policing.

With a packed agenda covering legislative priorities, juvenile crime laws, mental health funding, firearms regulations, and more - we had meaningful conversations about how we can work together to ensure safety, fairness, and trust in our communities.

Thank you to our law enforcement officers for their continued dedication and commitment to our communities. We are grateful for their service and sacrifice made each day to keep us safe.

This past Friday I had the privilege of attending the Link House Inc.'s Legislative Breakfast in Amesbury, where we discussed the critical work being done to expand addiction and mental health services in our communities. 

It was great to connect with local leaders, public safety officials, and advocates who are committed to strengthening support systems for those in need.

Link House's expanded programs for addiction and mental health are making a real difference, and I appreciate the dedication of their team to this important mission.
