The Massachusetts Department of Fire Services says Fire Prevention Week is 100 years old this week and to celebrate they want to share this important fire safety message: “Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape.”
State Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostroskey says: Modern residential fires burn much faster than they did in past decades. You could have less than three minutes to escape a fire at home today, compared to 15 minutes or more in the 1970s. That’s why it’s so important to have working smoke alarms and a practiced escape plan that includes two ways out.
Smoke Alarms:
More than 60% of Massachusetts fire deaths last year happened in overnight hours and smoke alarms are the best defense. Check the batteries and replace alarms older than 10 years.
Home Escape Planning:
Every home needs an escape plan. Look for two ways out of every room – one could be a window and keep escape routes clear of furniture and clutter. Pick a family meeting place a safe distance away from the house. Practice your escape route, at least twice a year. With smoke, you will have to “get low and go.”
